Dyslexia Services

Dyslexia is a neurological difference in the way a person learns and processes information. It's very common, affecting 1 in 5 people and accounting 85% for those with learning disabilities. It is NOT associated with low intelligence, lack of motivation, or hearing or visual impairments. Dyslexia is a lifelong condition that is not currently treated with medications, but with educational interventions. Below are the different services offered at Essential Bookstore.

Instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, oral language, comprehension, and composition for students with dyslexia and related disorders.

This program addresses phonological awareness, sound-symbol association, six syllable types, written spelling patterns, morphology, syntax, reading fluency, and comprehension.

The WELLS program is a transition to English program. It introduces word parts such as prefixes, roots and suffixes which transfer from Spanish to English and English to Spanish.

Reading Tutorials

1

Developing Metacognitive Skills

DMS is an instructional framework based on the tenets of structured literacy designed to develop deep comprehension skills by guiding students to think about their thinking as they read; it engages students in the depth and breadth of language.

(Grades 4 - 8)

2

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is the ability to read texts, process it, and understand it. Instruction involves phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary knowledge, and reading fluency.

(Pre-readers, age 3+)

3

Written Composition

This program helps writers with revision. The lessons encompass organization, clarity, content, and flow. Each topic provides lessons that enhance writing, such as figurative language, word choice, voice, tone, sentence complexity, and character development.

* Phonics takes a rigorous, step-by-step approach to teaching a child to read based on scientific research. It starts with building phonemic awareness—decoding the sound a word makes—and correlating it to the symbol for the sound—the letter. Many adults with reading disabilities never mastered phonemic awareness.
