About the Course
Research has demonstrated the importance of phonological awareness, letter recognition, and oral language in the acquisition of reading and spelling skills. Once students understand the sound structure of spoken language and can instantly name letters, they are ready to learn how sounds map onto letters. This knowledge builds their ability to decode unfamiliar words. Comprehension is developed through listening and retelling.
In Reading Readiness, students will receive:
The foundational skills that are necessary to become fluent readers and accurate spellers;
Hands-on, multisensory activities;
Strategies for building instant recognition of words with reliable and unexpected pronunciations; and
Explicit and systematic handwriting instruction to spelling and writing

I received extensive training from the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) and Neuhaus Education Center (Bellaire, TX) in Reading Readiness, Basic Language Skills (Advanced), Developing Metacognitive Skills, Written Composition, Multisensory Grammar, and Scientific Spelling. Additionally, I completed Region IV in Reading by Design modules. To assist students whose first language isn't English, I studied Words of our World (WOW) and WELLS 2 programs, which are transition to English programs to provide a systematic and explicit approach for teaching English language and literacy skills to Spanish-speaking English language learners.
