Hello

My name is Trisha Clerk. I am the founder and owner of Essential Bookstore. I have more than 20 years of experience as an educator and dyslexia practitioner. Several years ago while teaching children how to read, I discovered there was a large gap in learning and the tools provided to help those with reading disabilities were inadequate. That's when I decided to create a safe, inclusive environment that promotes literacy,  empowers customers to build diverse communities and support works of creatives from the African diaspora. I even created an evaluation app to do automatic progress monitoring and provide reports to parents.

Unfortunately, Black women founders receive less than 1% of funding for their startups. Many of us finance these ventures totally alone without help from family, banks, private investors, government grants, or other organizations designed to fund small businesses. This obviously becomes a barrier that impedes on our growth, but not our passion. I've never felt more committed to anything in my life.

In an effort to increase literacy in our community, Essential Bookstore provides intensive, individualized reading instruction in dyslexia and other related disabilities, including dysgraphia, spelling, handwriting, comprehension, and phonological deficit. In the coming weeks, we will begin daily phonological lessons on our social media sites and provide helpful tips for phonemic awareness.  Additionally, our goal is to offer FREE literacy workshops so parents can receive resources to help their children's reading skills improve. But we need your help.
